Upload a square image at 512×512, as PNG. Discord's published minimum for server icons is 128×128, with a note to crop "in multiples of 128" — 512 is 128×4, so it clears the floor with room to spare and stays sharp on high-DPI screens.
Discord publishes no file-size cap for server icons at all (the 8 MB and 10 MB numbers you may have seen belong to different assets — more on that below), so the only thing to get right is the square crop.
Server icon, server avatar, and profile picture get confused constantly — they're three separate assets with different owners and different published specs. Here's how they compare.

Sources, in Discord's own words — the 128×128 minimum comes from Discord's How do I create a server? article ("The minimum size for icons is 128x128. If you'd like to select a specific area from a large image, crop it in multiples of 128 (128X2=256, 128X3=384, etc.)."), which is the only place Discord states a server-icon dimension. "Animated Server Icon" is listed under Level 1 Perks (2 Server Boosts) in the Server Boosting FAQ. The server-avatar row comes from the Per-Server Profiles FAQ, which covers a member's own per-server avatar — a Nitro feature, not the server's icon. Checked August 2026.
Open Server Settings → Overview, click the circular icon at the top, and upload a new image. Only members with the Manage Server permission see that option. The server list, the member sidebar, and every invite preview all pull from this one file.
An animated PFP requires a personal Nitro subscription. An animated server icon is different — the server needs Boost Level 1, which takes 2 Server Boosts from any combination of members. Buying Nitro doesn't animate a server's icon directly, but every Nitro subscriber gets 2 Boosts to spend, and 2 is exactly Level 1 — so one subscriber can get a server there alone.
128 is the published floor, and Discord's own instructions say to crop above it in multiples of 128 — 256, 384, 512, and up. Staying on that grid means every downscale the CDN performs lands on a clean pixel boundary instead of a fractional one, which is what keeps an icon looking sharp instead of slightly smeared.
Every server icon gets masked into a circle in the server list, the member sidebar, and the invite screen. Anything in the corners of your square is clipped. If your icon is text or a wordmark, keep it centred with real padding — letters that reach the edge of the square lose their first and last strokes.
Both numbers get quoted as the server icon limit, and neither is right. Discord publishes no file-size cap for server icons — 8 MB belongs to server avatars, and 10 MB to profile banners. Each got copied onto the wrong asset, the same way 128×128 got copied from the emoji spec onto profile pictures.

Yes, but the server needs Boost Level 1 (2 Server Boosts) first — that's a server-wide unlock, not a personal Nitro subscription. Below Level 1, an uploaded GIF is shown as a static image.
128×128 is Discord's minimum, not its target. On a 1× display it can pass, but on a Retina or 1440p screen the same slot renders larger, and a 128px source has no extra detail left to give. Upload at 512×512 or larger and the softness goes away.
The server icon is the server itself — the small circle in everyone's server list, set by an admin. A server avatar is one member's own picture inside that specific server, set by that member. They're unrelated images with unrelated specs; see the Discord PFP size guide for the avatar side.
