GIF Emote Compressorkeep your emoji animated, meet a size limit
Set a file-size budget for an animated GIF. Compare the original and finished animation, then download a file that measures below your limit. Processing stays in this browser.
Compress a GIF for Discord emoji
1. Set the budget
Discord's guidance says custom emoji must be under 256KB, including animated emoji. This tool starts with a 256 × 1024-byte budget and checks the finished GIF's exact bytes. You can choose a stricter limit. A local size check does not guarantee Discord upload acceptance.
2. Let the tool try smaller versions
The compressor tries fewer palette colors and smaller dimensions first, keeping every frame. If those attempts do not fit, it tries fewer motion samples and combines their frame delays. The GIF stays animated; it is never replaced with a static first frame.
3. Compare and download
Check fine detail, motion and transparent edges in the preview. The result shows bytes, dimensions, frame count and encoded duration. A download appears only for a GIF strictly below the chosen limit. If the budget cannot be met, increase it or shorten the source animation.
Size requirements checked October 14, 2026: Discord's custom emoji documentation. The document uses “KB” without defining a byte conversion; the budget above makes our conversion explicit.
What changes during compression?
Color and detail
A GIF can use up to 256 palette entries. This compressor reserves one for transparency and can reduce the remaining colors. Smaller palettes may introduce banding. Shrinking the image may soften tiny text and lines. Compression is not lossless.
Motion and timing
At least two frames remain. When frames are sampled, their delays are added to the preceding kept sample so the total encoded duration is preserved. Source frame delays and loop-count settings are retained when every frame is kept. Browsers may display very short or zero delays at a slower minimum interval.
Transparency and proportions
GIF supports transparent or opaque pixels, not smooth alpha. Resized edge pixels are mapped to that binary transparency. Each frame is composed before resizing, including restore-background and restore-previous instructions. The source aspect ratio is retained within whole-pixel rounding.
GIF compression questions
Why did my GIF become smaller but look different?
Palette reduction changes some colors. Resizing reduces detail, and frame sampling can make fast motion less smooth. The result explains which adjustments were used. If the source already fits the budget and is at most 128 px, it is retained unchanged. Review the animation before uploading.
Why couldn't the compressor hit my target?
A small budget may be too tight for the animation's detail and length. This tool caps attempts at 32 and processing at 45 seconds to protect your browser. It stops with a clear message instead of offering an oversized file. Try a larger limit or remove unnecessary motion in your source editor.
Is this the same as resizing a GIF?
A resizer chooses dimensions. This compressor also searches palette and motion settings against an exact byte budget. For ordinary resizing or multi-platform presets, use the Discord emote resizer or main emote resizer.
Can I use a static image or a Discord sticker?
This page accepts animated GIF emoji. For a PNG, JPEG or WebP, use the static Discord emoji compressor. Discord stickers use different requirements; this tool does not convert GIF to APNG.
Does it upload my GIF or check my Discord account?
No. GIF bytes are processed locally in a disposable browser worker. This page does not upload the source or connect to Discord. Site analytics records tool actions and numeric output statistics, without file names or image contents.
Which browsers work?
Use a current Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari with module workers and OffscreenCanvas support. Keep the page open while processing. You can cancel at any time or choose another file to stop the current attempt.
